It's Face Mask Time!

montagne jennesse facemasks

For the last few weekends I've either been working or just relaxing - so this weekend we (my other half and I) decided to do something rather than waste it laying in bed (even though that sounds amazing right now). We ended up in Milton Keynes - which is about 40 miles from where we live.

We had a good browse through lots of shops - Boots, Superdrug, HMV, The Body Shop and Lush to name a few. I picked the face masks up in Boots as they were on special and you know me - I can't resist a bargain. Got some things in Lush too ... but there will be another post about that soon :)

I managed to persuade my other half to be a tester for one of the face masks tonight, and I chose one too.

montagne jennesse facemasks

We have the: 'Black Seaweed Peel Off Masque' on the top half - I have put together a rating/pointing system:

Feel - very sticky and runny - I think I had more on my hands than I did on his face.
Look - it's a black seaweed face mask - so the black colour is no issue for me. As you can see in the picture it did tend to clog together quickly and dry before it was evenly spread over the face.
Application - took about 2/3 minutes to make sure it was evenly spread over the entire facial area (this was after picture was taken).
Time - 15/20 minutes although mask had still not hardened in places after this time.
Removal - most of the mask peeled off with no trouble however as mentioned above after specified time (15/20 mins) there was still some wet patches that didn't peel off - these were wiped off with a baby wipe.
Afterwards - face felt more smoother and looked fresh and clean.

Overall Score: 7/10

The second half is of the: 'Mud Pac' face mask - which I chose:

Feel - just the right consistency - not too thin but not too thick.
Look - The picture I thought was more darker blue than the actual mask which was more a pale duck egg blue - again no real issue with the colour. This did spread much easier than the other mask but I think this is more due to the fact its a creme mask rather than a peel off mask.
Application - Took about a minute as was evenly distributed throughout the facial area.
Time - 15/20 minutes - this is a creme mask so was a rinse job.
Removal - I decided to go for a shower - so I rinsed this off before I got in the shower - came off very easily.
Afterwards - face felt softer and cleaner, although still a little dry however that's normal for my skin - wasn't expecting my face to be baby bum smooth.

Overall Score - 8/10

The cost of each was £1.00 each.

What face masks are you using at the moment? Any you would recommend?

What's on my iPhone!

iphone screenshot

So I have seen this post floating around a few blogs that I read and I've also seen a few YouTube videos on the subject.

So since it's a cold, miserable wet raining Thursday evening ... Why not ...

I'm a bit of a neat freak when it comes to my iPhone - I like all my apps sorted into categories (folders) and my main important ones on my front page.

I'm not going to bore you with detailed information about each app - as you will know most or all of them.

My static apps (4 along the bottom bar) - Facebook, Messages, Chrome and Music

So on my first page - it is mostly the iPhone apps - App Store, iTunes Store, Calendar, Photos, Camera etc ...

Then I have all my social media - Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube ... all others I have keep in a 'social' folder - that has apps like Snapchat, Vine, Photobox, Instaphoto etc. I use these mostly for my Blog :)

My second page is just full of folders that I rarely use ...

Education - includes some apps I used for uni, Paypal, Starbucks ... not really education but who cares?!

O2 - this is just a collection of my O2 apps that I need sometimes

Games - the name of the folder explains it ... I tend to keep most of my games on my iPad but this Games folder is for my authentication keys for a couple of games I play ... WOW being one.

Travelling - I use the tube when I'm in London so the tube apps come in handy as well as the train app for checking train times.

Photography - just some apps I downloaded when I was playing with Instagram

Shopping - apps I use for online shopping - Amazon, Ebay, Tesco etc.

So not a very exiting iPhone to be honest ... my background is also lacking, but I'm a very minimalist person - so the blue blobs floating around is okay for me.

My top 5 ...

1. Spotify
2. Facebook
3. Instagram
4. Camera/Pictures
5. Twitter

Hope you enjoyed the post :)

The Graze 'Breakfast' Box

So in my quest to eat more healthily, I decided to restart my graze.com subscription.

For those of you who don't know - graze.com deliver nutritional snacks through your letterbox. You don't need anyone to be in to sign for them as its small enough to fit through your letterbox. You normally get 4 snacks per box and there small enough to take to work or fit into your pocket for a quick snack.

At the time of writing this post - they offer 3 different types of box:

- You can get a 'snack' box - which is a range of different snacks such as chocolate pretzels, popcorn, flapjacks ...
- You can also get a 'breakfast' box - which is a range of different breakfast cereal types such as strawberry and cream granola, maple and pecan granola, dark chocolate orange granola ...
- You can also get a 'kids' box too - which is snacks more aimed at kids such as tangy twisters or treasure chest.

(They have also started a new 'big' box however it's coming soon)

Anyway I visited the website and noticed since I was last on - they had the newer 'breakfast' box option available - it's probably not new now ... but it's new to me as I had never heard, nor seen it before since I stopped my graze subscription last time.

graze.com breakfast box

So this lovely box arrived in the post last week (apologies for the lateness of the post but I wanted to try each cereal I got before posting to give the best opinion on the ones I tried).

So as you can see (above) - small enough to fit in your letterbox, adorable little designs on the box and it's personalised with your name on top right hand corner (the light is shining on it, but my name 'John' is on there). Obviously the box is sealed but I had already taken the seals off before I took took the pictures.

Once opened you are presented with 4 different cereals (not sure if you would classify them as cereals) maybe ... snacks/granolas/breakfast item ...

graze.com breakfast box

graze.com breakfast box

When you get your boxes you just get a random selection of 4. You can choose on the website different options for each of the different breakfast items - you can choose: 'bin', 'try', 'like', 'love' or 'send soon'.

I enjoyed all four that I got - however my favourite would have to be the Strawberries & Cream Granola!

The box also comes with a little card that explains the nutritional information for each of the 4 types of granola that you get (as below).

graze.com breakfast box

Graze have also given me a code if you want to try it. I believe this is for new 'grazers' only:

It means you'll get your first, fifth and tenth box free, I believe the normal cost is £3.99.

Also they gave me 4 codes which existing 'grazers' and new 'grazers' can use:

You just go to graze.com/breakfast and enter the code: JOHNA9DW

New 'grazers' will get their first breakfast box free, then you will have to start paying.
Existing 'grazers' will get an additional box free when they buy a breakfast box.

If you do buy one let me know ... as I get a free one when you use my codes :)

Graze is also environmentally friendly which is another great aspect of the whole idea ... the boxes, the leaflet, the packaging are all recyclable ...

Anyway hope you enjoyed the post and it was informative enough for you ... if you want to know anything else I might have missed then please visit graze.com/about and you should find out anything you want to know there.

The Liebster Award!

liebster award

I was lucky enough to get nominated or chosen (not sure of the exact wording) for the Liebster Award by Charlotte of 'My Charlotte's Web of Life so thanks for that Charlotte - really unexpected and a great surprise.

As Charlotte mentioned on her blog - it is a great way for bloggers to get to know each other and a great way to help each other out!

For those of you who don't know - the Liebster Award (from what I've gathered from Google) is a blogger award that bloggers give to each other - there is no award panel or award committee or any judges looking through the blogs deciding whose the best. Other bloggers say it's a sort of chain blog post but with the idea that you can get to see other people's blogs and get to know the blogging community a bit better.

The Rules (yes there are rules):

1. Link back the person that nominated you for the award.
2. You must write 11 facts about yourself so people can learn more about you.
3. You have to answer the 11 questions chosen by your nominator.
4. After completing these tasks you should nominate 11 other bloggers who have under 200 followers (used to be 3000 followers) and give them 11 questions to answer - you cannot nominate your nominator.
5. You have to let your nominees know that they have been nominated by giving them a link to this post about the award

So let us begin ...

1. So I have already mentioned but thank you to my nominator Charlotte - her blog link is above - check her out if you get time :)

2. 11 facts about myself:

> I love Starbucks

> I love my iPhone, my iPad and my MacBook (yep I'm an Apple loser)
> I enjoy taking pictures - don't take as many as I'd like but trying to
> I'm a neat-freak, OCD organiser and hate when things are out of place
> I love showers - I spend a could 45 minutes in a shower
> I'm really bad with money - if I have money - I will spend it regardless if I need the thing I'm buying
> I enjoy baking and cooking for others
> My favourite season is Winter - snow, ice and the cold crisp air!
> I have one younger brother called Christopher, he is 18, 19 in September
> I'm a bit of a gamer (not ashamed to admit it)
> I really want to visit NYC at some point in my life!

3. Answer the questions chosen by Charlotte:

1. If you could live anywhere in the world (other than where you live currently) where would you live and why?

I've not travelled much in my life, but going from other people's experiences, YouTube videos etc ... I would have to go with the US (not sure which state) but it just looks amazing - it's so big, there is everything and anything you could ever imagine and I think it seems way much better than the UK.

2. Who's your favourite actor/actress?

I really like Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) from Game of Thrones at the moment. GoT was her first real acting job and you would have thought she had been doing it for years. I think she is a real inspiration. She's got Twitter/Instagram - go follow her. :)

3. Do you have any hidden talents, if so what is it?

Not that I can think of ... I can knit a scarf with wool and knitting needles - my grandmother taught me when I was really young.

4. What is your favourite book that is also a film?

Harry Potter - without a doubt - loved those books well before the films came out. The films are good too.

5. How old were you when you started your blog, and why did you want to write one?
This is a difficult question to answer for me. I did start a blog when I was around 17/18 when I first went to university but it was really just a diary for me ... I just talked about my day, and what I did at uni. I deleted it a few months after as I didn't have time to keep doing it what with university coursework. I then left university and started a newer blog. Same style though - just about my life and what I was doing. Got rid of that again about a year after (I would have been 19). And now at the age of 23 (and more maturer) I have started 'ShoutJohn' which covers a range of different topics.

6. Do you like/have any animals? If so, what animals do you have?
I love Cats and Dogs. I used to have a cat called Sonny but then we gave him to my grandparents when I was about 5 year old, we still got to see him every week when we visited. He sadly died at the age of 16 due to cat cancer. But he did live a long life and he was treated amazingly by my grandparents.

I also love dogs - never had one but I've looked after other people's dogs and loved it.

7. If you could be a character from any Disney movie who would you be and why?
Probably Aladdin - I liked his magic carpet and his castle. :)

8. What would be your perfect day out?
I enjoy doing just about anything. Maybe some sight-seeing, some shopping, a nice meal (Nandos or Wagamamas) then a nice walk somewhere, then film and bed - I love my bed (who doesn't).

9. Do you prefer your birthday or Christmas Day?
My birthday - as it's all about ME! (cos that doesn't sound big-headed) I like both.

10. What is your favourite: main course, snack and dessert?
Probably main course - as it's the most filling and at the moment I'm trying to eat healthy so I don't want to snack or eat desert all the time.

11. What would be your dream job?
Something with computers or administration.

4. Choose (nominate) 11 bloggers:

> Mimika's Little Wonderland
> Shopping Obsession
> Stephi Lareine
> The Black Pearl Blog
> Carly's Beauty World
> Alldolledup
> Smitten Kitchen
> A Little Obsessed
> Melissa-Lou
> Jess About Average
> How Sweet It Is

My 11 questions for my chosen bloggers:

1. Get your iPod/iPhone/iPad/Spotify/MP3 Player - what is the first song in your most recently played playlist?
2. If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?
3. When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time?
4. What was the first thing you bought with your own money?
5. What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever done?
6. What is something you learned in the last week?
7. What is your one major weekness?
8. If you could change your name to anything what would your new name be?
9. Have you ever flown first class?
10. What do you consider is the most important appliance in a house?
11. What was the last movie you went to see?

Enjoy and I look forward to reading all your answers :)

PS ... I understand some people may view this as one of those 'chain emails' or 'spam chain letters' however I'm doing this to showcase the blogs I enjoy reading and as a way to expose them to my readers. I will understand if you don't want to participate or do the post yourself, if for whatever reason you don't want me to showcase your blog - please email me (contact@shoutjohn.co.uk) and I will remove you from this post.

Mojito Cupcakes

I was flicking through a magazine last week and came across a recipe for non-alcoholic cupcakes so I thought it would be a good recipe to try it out and low and behold on Sunday the weather was horrible!

For the cupcake batter you will need:

250g - unsalted butter (soft)
100g - caster sugar
150g - Demerara sugar
250g - self-raising flour
4 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 tbsp milk
2 limes worth of zest
2 tbsp of lime juice

For the icing:

300g cream cheese
100g icing sugar (sifted)
some mint leaves
1 lime worth of zest

Step 1: Preheat the oven at 180C. The recipe makes 24 cupcakes so get 24 cupcake liners and (I had 2 x 12 cupcake trays) so use 2 if you have them.
Step 2: Beat together the butter and the two sugars (caster and demerara) until light and fluffly.
Step 3: Beat in the eggs 1 at a time (you'll probably notice the mixture separates and looks like its curdled) this is okay. Following on from that add the flour (bit by bit) until mixed in, then add the vanilla extract, milk, lime zest and the lime juice.
Step 4: Next get a couple of spoons, your cupcake trays and the bowl of mixture and spoon into each cupcake liner until they are 3/4 full.
Step 5: Pop into the oven (careful not to burn yourself) if your a kid - get an adult to help you. Bake for about 15 minutes - then check with a skewer by piercing one of the cakes and if it comes out clean - it's ready, if not pop back in for 5 mins and then check again.
Step 6: Transfer the cooked cupcakes to a wire rack to cool and then take a well deserved break while they cool (ie cup of tea and a scroll through bloglovin).

mojito cupcakes shoutjohn
Photo: ShoutJohn

Step 7: If you haven't already - pop all your dirty dishes into the dishwasher or get washing them.
Step 8: If you don't want to do Step 7 ... leave them lying on the side for a bit and make your parents/other half/maid clean them.
Step 9: Mix together the cream cheese, icing sugar (make sure its sifted so its not got any lumps), half of the lime zest, and some chopped up mint together in a bowl. Now I thought this was quite runny once I did it. So I popped it back into the fridge to cool for a bit and thicken. An hour later. I got a spoon - and then smeared some on the cupcake and covered the top and sprinkled a little bit of lime zest/chopped mint on top.

TOP TIP: If you are making these the night before an event or if your taking them into work. Pop the cream cheese topping in a tub and ice the muffins when you get there. Only because you should really keep the topping chilled which means you have to chill the muffins if you've already put the topping on which I think ruins the muffins and makes them cold and chewy.

So the finished product should look like this (bear in mind I ran out of mint and lime zest to decorate with as I put most of it into the cream cheese topping) but never mind ... still tasted amazing!

Hope you enjoyed the post! Did you bake anything this weekend because of the bad weather. If so ... let me know and I might try it :)

Healthy Eating - Part 1

grapefruit
Photo: Flickr by: Dullhunk
Most of you who read my blog probably start work at a reasonable time (ie 9am) not 5am like me. So getting up, and getting ready and eating breakfast is a big issue for me. Sometimes I think my body suffers because of it (wow ... dramatic) but on a serious note ... My alarm goes off at 4am, by the time I've properly woken up and gotten out of bed it's 4.40am, enough time to get some clothes on, run a face wipe over my face, do my hair, clean my teeth and then make it to work on time for 5am.

So I miss the important things like breakfast which as we're always being told is a very important part of your day!

I've put some measures into place to help me get breakfast in the morning and I try to make it healthy. This involves me preparing breakfast/lunch for the following day the night before - just before I go to bed. I've also started keeping food at work. In my previous blog (July Favourites) I mentioned that I got some plastic containers - so I have been using them. I got 3 sizes (small, medium, large) ... which is good for different sizes of food.

The first item I have been eating (and you can probably guess by the picture) is:

Grapefruit
I never used to be a fan of Grapefruits, I remember when I worked at my hotel job - every morning we had to cut about 10 or so grapefruits and I couldn't stand the sourness or the taste. But now I really like them and enjoy the crisp citrus flavour every morning. It seems to wake you up! They are also a good source of vitamin C, contain the fiber pectin and the pink and red grapefruits contain the beneficial antioxidant lycopene.

To explain that a little better (for those of you who didn't take Home Economics classes):

Vitamin C - is good for wound healing - from cuts, open wounds, broken bones and burns and preventing infection within the body.
Fiber - Pectin - many benefits such as normalising bowel movements, helps lower cholesterol, helps control blood sugar levels and aids in achieving a healthy weight.
Lycopene - helps to lower the risk of prostate cancer, higher levels of this vitamin have shown to give protection against heart attacks and have also shown to protect against breast cancer.

It's also super easy to prepare - slice in half (careful with the knife), cut the segments with a serrated blade (again, careful with the knife), then cut around the outer circumference of the grapefruit to free the segments. Then wrap in cling film, I then pop in my small box and pop in the fridge overnight until I go to work the next morning.

TIP: Oh remember and take a fork or like me you'll be using your fingers!!

Hope you enjoyed the post - what healthy items do you eat for breakfast? Let me know ... Part 2 will feature other breakfast items I like to eat :)

(24/02/16 - Edit: Just a little side note to say that I was told recently that taking some medications and grapefruit can be risky so please be careful)

July Favourites

It's that time of the month again ...

I've had a fun, enjoyable month ... apart from the heat in England ... it's been so hot and I'm not much of a fan of the heat. Even though it normally rains so hot sunny days are regarded as rare.

This month's favourites are quite random ... so let's begin ... ...

July favourites

1. Kellogs Crunchy Nut - I've been trying to eat properly and get breakfast before I go to work in the morning. Not that I'm saying this cereal is the best choice but I've always loved them. My parents always classed them as a 'treat' cereal. Normally we would only ever have rice krispies, cornflakes, wheatabix (you know all the boring plain ones) ... so it was always awesome when my parents would get this when we went shopping.

2. Witches of East End - I'm always on the lookout for new television series' to watch as every year all the normal programmes I watch end for their yearly break and I'm left with nothing to watch. I have started using this website called PogDesign - TV Calendar - it's the best website I've come across - you basically 'subscribe' to your favourite shows and it tells you when its on next, series lists, synopsis', and you can check off when you've watched a show. It shows a total of how many hours you've wasted of your life watching television ... it's really good and you should definitely check it out. Anyway I found Witches of East End through PogDesign as they have a 'new additions' section so you can see when new shows are added to their website and this was one of them ... I checked it out on wikipedia and they claim its similar to Charmed - now I was a big fan of Charmed (RIP) and so I instantly took a liking to the show and love every minute of it ... it's currently in its second season :)

3. Wilko Food Storage Containers -  It my ever-lasting quest of trying to save money. I bought some food storage containers from Wilkos on the weekend. Now the link on leads to the 1 x food storage box for £1.40 but I bought the 3 x food storage boxes for special price of £2.00 (not sure how long the deal is for) however I couldn't find the link to the 3 boxes. Anyway their great for anything really. I've used them for sandwiches, carrot sticks, cucumber, yoghurt, chopped fruit ... possibilities are endless. I mean you don't have to use them just for lunch ... you can use them to store leftover food from the night before and then eat it the next day or take it to work ... Sounds like I'm going on about nothing ... but I can 100% say that you do save money by using these and taking food to work from home rather than buying lunch everyday when your at work.

4. Daim Ice Cream (or Dime, or Diam, or whatever it used to be called) - I discovered this with my other half on the weekend when we were looking for ice cream (as it was soooooooo hot). I got to choose the ice cream and so I went with this .... best choice ever! It's toffee ice cream (I think) and you get bits of chewy toffee and bits of chocolate in it. The tub was gone in a matter of hours ... well it lasted less than a day.

5. Diggy Diggy Hole  - This is a new song by the Yogscast - they released it 11th June. I couldn't stop listening to it at home, in the car, at work. I think I drove everyone mad ... I've kind of calmed down now ... but it's just so catchy! Worth a listen on youtube (link is there) or you can download for £0.79 on iTunes.

6. Destiny - The Game - Words cannot describe how good this game is. I managed to get a beta key by pre-ordering the game for PS3 from Amazon and I was so happy to be part of it - the game is AMAZING! I'll probably do a separate post on it ... Quick version - the makers of Halo (bungie.net) created this open world and the storyline is great. Basically a being known as the 'traveller' arrives in our solar system - makes all the planets habitable. Then its enemy arrives chasing it and basically destroys everything. In comes you (a guardian with a little floating robot called ghost) and you chase back the monsters with the power of the traveller inside you) There are open worlds to explore where you can do quests or you can follow the storyline as well. I can't wait to get the game in September so I can continue. I won't bore you with all the details but what its about etc is on the website (link to the left). It's available on PS3, PS4, Xbox360 and XboxOne. So multi-platform which I think is why its so popular (well one of the reasons).

Anyway thats all for this month guys - hope you enjoyed reading and let me know what your favourites were this month?
